From Pizza Hut to Accounts Pro – Celebrating 25 Years at Rayner Essex

Sometimes, the start of a career isn’t planned—it’s prompted by opportunity, circumstance, and a bit of courage. For Marion Woods, one of our longest-serving employee, her journey into accountancy began when she was working at Pizza Hut UK. We joined Marion to learn more about her career journey and the remarkable success she has achieved over her 25 years at Rayner Essex.

Why did you choose a career in accountancy?

They offered the AAT qualification in the evenings. At the time, I had just separated from my husband and had a young child to support. I saw it as an opportunity to build something more secure for us both. That decision became my stepping stone into the world of finance.

What did you do prior to joining Rayner Essex?

I had diverse experience and worked in various job roles from Unemployment Benefits, The Halifax Building Society, to  GEC Marconi, where I mastered my skills in payroll. I was also working in payroll at Pizza Hut UK. Each role taught me something new and helped me acquire new skills, but I still had this lingering feeling that I was not utilising my AAT qualification.

Why did you choose Rayner Essex, why is it a good fit for you?

When I came across Rayner Essex, they were looking for part-time staff in client payroll services. When interviewed, I informed them that I wanted to make better use of my AAT qualification, and they promised that if I committed to working in payroll for a year, they would help me move into general accounts. True to their word, they did. That trust and flexibility sparked a lasting relationship.  Over the years I worked in various departments – from what was then called “Small Jobs” (now Accounting Solutions), to Management Accounts, and finally into Internal Accounts.

What is your role and describe an average day at work?

Now working in Internal Finance, I enjoy a varied role which includes bookkeeping, month-end reconciliations, purchase ledger and staff payroll. No two days are the same. I start updating the office cashbook, and what I do next depends on the time of the month and the needs of various departments. It’s a role that really keeps me on my toes, and I love the variety.

What is your greatest achievement and what motivates you?

Without hesitation, my proudest achievement would be becoming AAT qualified. The qualification opened the door to everything that followed. And now, to have reached 25 years at Rayner Essex — it feels like a real milestone. I also received a Student Award when I was studying prior to joining Rayner Essex, which gave me immense confidence early on in my journey.

What do you like best about working at Rayner Essex?

It’s the people, 100%! The team ethos is brilliant — everyone works hard but is always ready with a smile or a chat. There’s such a great mix of ages, cultures, and personalities here, which makes the office feel really welcoming.  People work really hard and are very friendly.  I also appreciate the flexibility that hybrid working brings. It suits my lifestyle perfectly—I can work from home, but still enjoy the buzz of the office.

There are regular social events that get both offices coming together, and that gives me the opportunity of meeting new staff, and getting to know other departments. I really enjoyed our recent Sip & Paint evening, where I discovered my artistic talents over a couple of glasses of wine, which was tremendous fun!  Our Christmas and Summer parties are also such great fun, where both London and St Albans offices come together for some memorable experiences.

Tell us a little more about yourself and share something not many people would know?

I don’t really have any secrets—I’m a bit of an open book and never keep anything back! I suppose that can be an advantage, as I get to know people easily and I’m always open to meeting new people and making them feel at home at Rayner Essex!  I’m also a proud mum to a daughter who’s turning 30 this year. That makes me feel old just saying it! One thing people will not know about me is that I had open heart surgery when I was 14, which I suppose had a part to play in my resilient character. I also had the memorable opportunity of shaking hands with Pope John Paul II.  My hobbies growing up were Irish Dancing and traditional Irish music.

I also love spending time with family and friends, whether that’s going out for a local lunch, or walking, and also love travelling and have explored more than 50 countries around the world, some whilst cruising. There is so much of the world to experience and explore.

Where to next in your career?

I never went on to do ACCA or ACA as I was really happy with what I had achieved and didn’t feel I needed to pursue more. At this stage of my career after 25 year’s of service, I can honestly say that I am content. I just want to  to continue doing my best in the role that I love. No big ambitions —just pride in a job well done.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in accountancy and finance?

If you’re thinking about a career in finance, go for it!!! It can be incredibly rewarding, and there are so many different paths you can take. Whether you start in payroll, bookkeeping, or accounts, there are always opportunities to grow and develop a career that you love!
