Laila Khan's team story

Beauty brushes to balance sheets: My apprenticeship journey at Rayner Essex

Meet Laila Khan, an Accounting Apprentice at Rayner Essex whose journey from creative expression to analytical precision is anything but ordinary. We caught up with Laila to find out more.

Why did you choose a career in accountancy?

As a natural problem solver, I knew when I left school that I wanted a career that would allow me to use that skill in a practical and structured way. University never really felt like the right path for me, so I started exploring apprenticeship routes. Accountancy immediately stood out – it perfectly blends analytical thinking with real-world impact, which was exactly what I was looking for.

What did you do prior to joining Rayner Essex?

Prior to joining Rayner Essex, I was at Sixth Form at Beaumont School, where I studied A Levels in Geography, Economics, and Psychology.

Why did you choose Rayner Essex, why is it a good fit for you?

I first heard about Rayner Essex through a family member who mentioned the firm’s apprenticeship scheme. The idea of being able to earn while I learn really appealed to me, and hearing about the flexibility the firm offers to support study led me to applying for this role.

Since joining, I’ve felt incredibly supported by the firm – especially while completing my AAT qualification. I’m part of a team of like-minded individuals who are always ready to offer guidance and training and help without judgement. There’s a great balance between work and study, which has enabled me to apply my learning into practice in real time, with interest.

Learning to manage my own finances has also been an invaluable life lesson — which I think is essential for all school leavers. That’s why our Accounting Solutions team created The Ultimate Financial Survival Guide for School Leavers, which shares real insights into helping young professionals build strong financial foundations.

It’s been really rewarding to see my skills develop both on the job and through my studies, with qualifications gained along the way. I would highly recommend an apprenticeship at Rayner Essex to anyone thinking about a career in accountancy.

What is your role and describe an average day at work?

I currently work as an Accounts Apprentice in the Accounting Solutions department.

No two days are the same in this role! I work with a wide range of clients – from large businesses to SMEs and sole traders – on tasks like bookkeeping, VAT returns, management accounts, and Year-End accounts.

Communication plays a big part in my role. I regularly check in with managers and colleagues to stay aligned and ensure deadlines are met (my favourite catch-ups are always the ones over a cup of tea!). I enjoy building strong relationships with clients always focusing on client care, delivering efficient, reliable, and helpful support, with the client’s specific needs and goals always in mind.

Alongside the technical work in my role, a typical day can involve juggling a number of priorities – such as training new apprentices, reviewing client queries, as well as taking part in the firm’s social and community initiatives, whether that’s charity fundraising or helping to organise events. Taking part in the firm’s social committee initiatives has enabled me to build relationships across the wider firm, beyond my immediate department, meeting more of my team, which I’ve really enjoyed.

What is your greatest achievement and what motivates you?

Completing my AAT qualification is definitely my greatest achievement so far. The dedication and hard work it took is something I’ll always be proud of.

What keeps me motivated is my love for a challenge. I’m always pushing myself to improve and enjoy learning new things – which is a great mindset to have in this sector, especially since the industry is constantly evolving.

What do you like best about working at Rayner Essex?

The people! Without a doubt, that’s my favourite aspect of working at Rayner Essex. Even though I’m only required to be in the office three times a month, I find myself coming in most days just because I genuinely enjoy being around the team.

Across both offices, there’s a great culture of staying connected, through regular social events which were particularly helpful when I first joined the company, and meant that I could settle in quickly. Our social events are a brilliant way to get to know people across the company and enable us to build strong working relationships and friendships. Whether its gaming, Bake Off events, pasta making, art and sip, or sports days and summer BBQ events, there is something of interest for everyone and they are great fun.

Tell us a little more about yourself and share something not many people would know?

I love staying active – regular exercise classes are a big part of my week, and I’m a firm believer in getting my daily 10K steps in! When I’m not working, I’m usually spending time with friends and family. I’m quite an extrovert and love being around people. Interestingly, most people wouldn’t know that I used to be really shy a few years back, but have now gained immense confidence!

A few other fun facts about me are, I’m very creative – I love putting together makeup looks and planning events or parties. I enjoy cooking lately too, and love experimenting with new recipes – there’s something really exciting about being able to add your own twist to a dish.

If I wasn’t in accountancy, I’d probably be an events planner – I love using my creativity and watching everything come together, whilst pleasing others in the process! I am also a big believer in self-care. My favourite way to unwind is by doing something I enjoy, and at the moment, that’s attending Pilates classes once or twice a week, it’s a great way to reset and keep fit.

Where to next in your career?

Next up for me is going for my ACCA qualification and continuing to grow within the firm. I’m looking forward to taking on more responsibility, working with a broader client base, and deepening my technical knowledge and expertise.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in accountancy and finance?

Always be willing to push yourself. Say yes to new opportunities, even if they feel a bit out of your comfort zone – that’s where the growth happens. And don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Starting a career in accountancy, especially straight out of school, can feel overwhelming at times, but just remember that everyone around you is there to help. The learning curve might be steep, but keep going – you’ll be surprised how far you can go.
