Sometimes, the start of a career isn’t planned—it’s prompted by opportunity, circumstance, and a bit of courage. For Marion Woods,

We caught up with Josh Waters Hall to learn more about what drives him as an Audit Senior at Rayner

Ultimately, I chose Rayner Essex for the culture and environment. Having worked in several different roles across a number of firms, the one key aspect that I felt had been lacking and overlooked, was a healthy happy environment.

We recently caught up with Gillian McDonald in this team story, who shares her journey from Scotland to London, learning more about her career as a Tax Semi-Senior at Rayner Essex and getting better acquainted.

Euan has been working with Rayner Essex for over five years and shares his story about his career journey and what attracted him to joining as an Accounting Apprentice, excelling in his career and now going on to make his mark within accounting and finance.

I decided to work for a larger firm, where I could better my career prospects in payroll. I was also looking for a supportive work environment. Rayner Essex is a great fit, as I feel part of a big family, where my opinion counts, and where I am understood and supported personally and professionally.

We love working at Rayner Essex but don’t just take our word for it, here’s what our team think!

At Rayner Essex, we recognise the importance of gender equality and are committed to honouring the achievements of women. We believe that everyone, regardless of gender, should have the opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential.

Lucy Ghawss, Partner & Head of Audit, London

Having recently become a father, the understanding and adaptability that Rayner Essex has shown me has enabled me to help support my wife in balancing her life as a mother alongside her work life.

Daren Maloy, Assistant Manager, London

Having completed my Level 3 AAT apprenticeship, I joined Rayner Essex in 2021 and moved to London. My line manager and colleagues have been incredibly supportive, helping me balance work and study effectively. I have no regrets about choosing this path over university. Working here has not only advanced my career but has also equipped me with the skills needed to become a fully qualified ACA accountant!.

Amy Longden, Audit Supervisor, London

Ultimately, I chose Rayner Essex for the culture and environment. Having worked in several different firms, the one key aspect that I felt had been lacking and overlooked, was a healthy happy environment. One where everyone works hard but also supports and invests in each other, making it a friendly environment.

James Hadley, Corporate Tax Manager, London

I joined Rayner Essex as an unqualified Semi Senior, and focused on my study whilst working. I am really grateful for the ongoing support given to me by my managers, partners and team, whilst studying, enabling me to meet many milestones at a comfortable pace. I have gained invaluable knowledge and have gone on to achieve my qualifications, becoming an ACA qualified accountant all within the five year period.

Rhys Bevan, Manager, London

The flexibility offered by Rayner Essex is outstanding.  The supportive and friendly working environment has given me the work life balance to continue to have a rewarding professional career as a working mum.

Nicola Thurston, HR Manager, St Albans

Progression was really important for me, and very much attracted me to the apprenticeship scheme… What hugely appealed was that I could go from apprentice, to becoming a fully qualified accountant, whilst earning and studying, all at my own pace. I haven’t regretted my choice and I enjoy a happy work-life balance whilst working with an amazing team.

Euan Gelling, Semi-Senior in Accounting Solutions, St Albans

When I was looking to move away from the Big 4, it was important for me to move to a firm with a “family-feel”. As clichéd as it sounds, I knew the second I stepped into the Rayner Essex office that this was the right firm for me. The firm has strong values and is constantly looking to support and invest in its staff. We also have a superb flexible working policy which with a young son helps me enormously.
